European sprint champion Lintord Christie, just one 01 the big name stars booked tor the Miller Lite IAC International Meeting at Meadowbank on July 29, is out to upstage one oi Scotland’s lamous sons.

Christie aims to set a world best tor the rarely run 110m -and beat the previous mark 0111.00 seconds set on the same track more than seventeen years ago by Scotland‘s top prolessional sprinter George McNeill. McNeill, now 41, can ironically now run as an amateur in veteran meetings, but when he was at his peak, arguments raged ior years about whether he would have achieved similar success to Allan Wells had he competed as an amateur.

“This race will settle once and tor all who is the iastest- amateurs or prolessionals‘, says meeting organiser David Bediord, but whatever happens nothing is likely to be established conclusively.

Christie will be the backmarker in a handicap race run along similar lines to Meadowbank's lamous annual New Year prolessional sprint. Up against him will be several lormer protessionals who have turned to the amateur ranks in recent years, including Willie Fraser and Andrew Walker, both iormer winners oi the big money New Yearsprint.

Olympic iavelin champion Tessa Sanderson will also compete at Meadowbank on July 29, returning to the arena where she won Commonwealth gold and established such a rapport with the Scottish crowd two years ago. She will lace top Cuban lvonne Leal and West German Beale Peters, who pipped her ior bronze at last year’s World Championships.

The Miller Lite will give Scottish athletics tans the chance to see many at Britain’s top stars beiore the Olympics. Although the iull start list is unlikely to be known until the morning 01 the meeting, Scotland‘s10,000m Commonwealth champion Liz McColgan has conlirmed she will compete, as has world 5000m record holder Said Aoulta ol Morocco.
