Since jettisoning the old mini-leagues system some years back, the Skol Scottish League Cup has witnessed a boom in attendances and interest. Now every game must be finished on the night, by use of extra time and penalties it necessary. While this is undoubtedly an exciting format, the lack of replays discriminates against

the smaller, part-time clubs, who tire the Iongerthe game goes on: almost
always their only chance olwinning is to sew the game up in ninety minutes.
Wednesday 10 sees the first round oi this year’s competition, and although the Premier and First Division clubs do not join in until next week, a number of them will not know their second round opponents until attertonight's games: Hibs await the outcome at the Queen‘s Park v Stranraer clash; Morton take on the winners of Brechin City v Montrose; while Alloa or Stirling Albion wilttravel to Edinburgh to meet Meadowbank.
Sponsorship money has been substantially increased this year, with even tirst round losers receiving a reasonable sum. And as well as winning more money the Iurther they progress in the competition, teams can pick up bonuses for high-scoring and for good discipline.
The rapidity of the competition is another attractive leature, a club being able to go lrom the first round to a place in the semi-finals in the space of three weeks. The semis themselves take place in late September, with the linal a month later. Hangers have won the competition lor the last two years, and the almost uncanny way in which they and Celtic manage to avoid each other in cup draws increases the prospect of an Old Firm Iinal towards the end of October.
