BOBBING UP ALL OVER
Two Glasgow Bobbys are on duty over lunchtime on the 22nd. At Paisley, tenorist Bobby Deans leads his Quartet in one of the successful series of informal and free Sunday concerts in the Arts Centre bar. The other leading saxophonist, and also band leader and arranger, Bobby Wishart directs the Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra in one of their afternoons at the Glasgow Society Of Musicians premises behind the Mitchell Theatre.
Over in Edinburgh, Roger Spence, ex Platform, and now director olAssembly Music, has confirmed the line up iorthe organisation's second season, each Friday in the Queens Hall. Roger promises a lull programme through to the August Festival, with top quality iazz at its core, but a wide booking policy that includes ethnic and world music and a sprinkling of avant garde lmprovisors that might avoid classillcation.
On the 27th Carol Kydd will draw the usual lull house with her artful command of the jazz song repertoire. Two more Scottish residents take the next weeks. Guitarist Martin Taylor releases a new album with the cream of LA musicians in time for his concert on February 3rd, while Tommy Sampson celebrates his 70th birthday with the
Big Band and guests on the 10th.
On the 17th, extraordinary cello player Ernst Reijsigar leads an international quartet from their base in Amsterdam, consummate eclectic musicianship allied to surreal skills in performance, and arriving a week later are two of the leading American players of the post war generation, time-served in Miles Davis‘ bands. Bob Berg, saxophone and Mike Stern, guitar bring with them the remarkable drummer Dennis Chambers on the 24th.
One of the brightest lights and most enjoyable performers in British Jazz is saxophonist Andy Sheppard, and he returns to the Queens Hall on the 3rd March with a vibes player poached from the Jazz Warriors, making his group up to a sextet. They are supported by Paul Reid, a young black musician from Sheffield playing solo piano.
Two shows on the 17th March contrast the fluid extemporising of that celebrated virtuoso partnership of Chick Corea and Gary Burton on keyboards and vibes, with the wild lrish-American uiilean piping of the Davey Spillane Band. The latter late night concert is in conjunction with the Edinburgh Folk Festival.
Bassist Danny Thompson has mixed folk with jazz for years now, and brings Tony Roberts, saxophones and Bernie Holland, guitar in his Whatever, another EFF co-productlon on the 24th March.
Over here to record a television show with Tommy Smith, the esteemed pianist Tommy Flanagan, for years Ella Fitzgerald's accompanist, but recording associate of Miles, Rollins and Hawkins, leads a boppish trio or George Mraz, bass; and Kenny Washington, drums. That concert is followed on the same night of the 3131 March, by a performance of Tammy Smith’s Ouartet, celebrating the release oi the Edinburgh tenor player's new album on the most prestigious of labels, Blue Note.
