Tradition without innovation is sterile. New styles and modes at expression shape the evolution oi the music. No amount at head shaking will put a lid on it. And there is a lot at that in the world at the Great Highland Bagpipe.

A iew years ago the guardians at what was considered true and proper piping used ‘kitchen piping' as a dismissive term which was then taken up and proudly ilaunted by its subversive exponents. Syncopated rhythms, unusual time signatures, vibrato, note bending, tunes that corkscrew wildly and a great element at tun are all part oi it. The Canadians started it, and now everybody’s doing it. Well, the younger ones anyway.

The 78th Fraser Highlanders were a

regiment, raised in Canada in 1797,

CANADIAN CLUB

but the pipe band oi that name was iormed as recently as 1982 out oi an historical re-enactment society, and alter only seven years are accepted as the best pipe band in the world.

Now, in the competitive pipe band world, that doesn't necessarily mean that you would win the World Championship. But the Fraser Highlanders did, last year, and are returning to deiend their title at this year’s World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow’s Beliahouston Park on Saturday 12 August.

Marvelloust disciplined and precise, they eschew, at least in their competition sets, the wildest excesses oi the piping avant garde, yet neveriail to surprise in their material and periormance. Edinburgh’s Queens Hall is the venue ior their only Scottish concert on 9 August.

Canada is also the home oi Stephen Fearing, a supremely accomplished guitarist, songwriter and periormer oi the new acoustic roots music. The iniluence 01 blues, rock, pop, jazz, celtic (he spent 11 years in Ireland), and a high energy approach to his clever, original songs mark him out as one oi the brightest recording talents to emerge in years. He is much in demand all over North America and his new album is one at the biggest sellers in Canada. Over tor the Sligo Arts Festival and dates in England, he plays Edinburgh on the 9th.
