_ KING or THE ALTO

Peteriiing

: The Glasgow Society at Musicians is a ' club, bar and periormance space open to the public, just down the street from the Mitchell Library. lithe door is closed you just ring the bell.

Apart irom the weekly Star Folk Club

(whose guest on the 3rd, is the Glasgow actor/musician and saxophone player Allan Tall), most at the music is jazz-oriented, with Big Bands led by Bill Fanning or Tim Barella as resident lunchtime tare on Sundays, smaller groups on Wednesday, and each month regular concerts trom visiting star players.

Peter King is one at Britain’s greatest saxophone players, and with a trio plays the Society on the 6th. Out oi the legendary GOs’ Big Bands at Stan Tracey and Tubby Hayes, and iluent on tenor and soprano, he iound the ideal vehicle ior his energy and inventiveness playing the alto in more intimate line-ups.

A modest musician, not a name in the public’s eye, he gained the respect oi his peers in the jazz scene world wide, irom Al Cohn or Philly Joe Jones to Ray Charles and Jimmy Witherspoon. He has even ireed up a bit with John Stevens.

But Bebop remains the centre at his musical universe. Red Rodney, Charlie Parker’s trumpet playing sideman, once said oi King ‘He’s got it all. He’s musical. He’s most proiiclent. He swings like a demon - real hard bop school. He's got that natural growl in his playing, yet he’s soft and beautiiul when he wants to be.’ (Norman Chalmers)
