ART & EXHIBITIONS LIST

ALL AT SA

Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh.

Walk through work by the Borders Craft Association and the exhibition at ‘Major Twentieth Century Scottish Paintings’ and

you reach a show at prints by Tessa Beaver and Inger Lawrence, ‘inspired by The Sea, the movement oi shadows and the contours ol the Scottish Iandscape’. Both artists are technically assured. Lawrence lrequently uses a mix of woodcut, etching and collage to produce unique prints; Beaver prints on black paper, giving herwoodcuts the teel oi coloured chalk drawings, or paintings by Klee. Lawrence is inclined to portentousness; she gives unremarkable abstract exercises titles like ‘Genesis’, and her subject is very much “The Sea’ rather than the sea. Beaver combines abstraction and representation in a sometimes over-tastelul otiice modernism; ‘The Widening Gyre’ is a line exception, the image brought into a closer locus by the literary relerence.
