Walk through work by the Borders Craft Association and the exhibition at ‘Major Twentieth Century Scottish Paintings’ and
you reach a show at prints by Tessa Beaver and Inger Lawrence, ‘inspired by The Sea, the movement oi shadows and the contours ol the Scottish Iandscape’. Both artists are technically assured. Lawrence lrequently uses a mix of woodcut, etching and collage to produce unique prints; Beaver prints on black paper, giving herwoodcuts the teel oi coloured chalk drawings, or paintings by Klee. Lawrence is inclined to portentousness; she gives unremarkable abstract exercises titles like ‘Genesis’, and her subject is very much “The Sea’ rather than the sea. Beaver combines abstraction and representation in a sometimes over-tastelul otiice modernism; ‘The Widening Gyre’ is a line exception, the image brought into a closer locus by the literary relerence. Costumes and Sets by Kathakali and Centre Ocean Stream 3—7 Oct. Bright. gaudy costumes from the Indian dance group Kathakali and the English-based group. Ocean Stream. are displayed to coincide with their shows at the Church Hill Theatre.
Kathakali Artist-In-Besidence 3—5 Oct. Kalamandalam Haridasan demonstrates the art of Kalameruthu‘. powder paintings. These are usually sprinkled on the floors of temples and worshipped by Hindu devotees at prayer.
Kite Exhibition and Workshops 3—7 Oct. The exhibition ofornate flyers runs all week. There will also be the chance to try your hand at the art of kite-making on 7 October. l()am—lpm for ages l()andover. 2—5pm for all ages. The idea is to build a kite which can then be flown in the One World One Sky day at Holyrood Park on 8 October.

El Greco: Mystery and Illumination Until 15 Oct. Focusing on the series of FahuIa paintings. this small exhibition gives us a concentrated comparative analysis of El Greco‘s masterful use of Chiaroscuro and the effects of candlelight. Also a great opportunity to see the wonderful View of Toledo borrowed from New York‘s Metropolitan Museum. The next exhibition will be How Prints are Made on 26 October.

MIND'S EYE
Art At Heart, Glasgow School at Art. The Glasgow School of Art is to be the lirst European Gallery to host an exhibition at sculptures by blind Japanese artists. Japan has along tradition at teaching sculpture to the blind, centred on the Tom Gallery in Tokyo, which otters the annual Tom Prize: a national award tor sculpture by visually-impaired pupils. The exhibition which is coming to Glasgow, Art At Heart, is a collection at thirty outstanding sculptures produced over the past tour decades and is jointly organised by the Tom Gallery and the HNIB. There will also be a seminar on the philosophy and practice of art education in schools tor the blind in Japan held by Matayuki Miyazaki and Shinji Nishino, on 3 October 11am—3pm. (Ross Parsons)
