300 Years 300 Books Until 11 November. An exhibition celebrating the tercentenary ofthe founding ofthe National Library. whose origins go back to the establishment of the Advocates‘ Library in 1689. For each year ofthe library's existence there will be a specific exhibit representing a particularly interesting or curious acquisition ofthat year. The enormous range includes the poignant last letter of Mary Queen of Scots. the Gutenberg Bible. the War Diaries of Earl Haig and a 1985 edition of Old King Cole printed in Paisley.officially the smallest book in the world.

The leading architect ofearly Georgian Scotland. not to be confused with his even more famous son Robert. has his finest work displayed in the form of scale models and original drawings. Between the Jacobite risings of 1715 and ‘45 he designed ambitious buildings for some of Scotland‘s leading lights.
Patrons and Painters Until 8 Oct. The Exhibition covers the period from the late 17th century through the period of the Act of Union to the rising of 1745 - a time of political turmoil when the patronage of men of power was as important in the arts world as it was in the political sphere. Some of the best known Scottish painters of this period are represented.

Aborigines of the Amazon: The Yanomani 4 Oct—l6 Nov. An exhibition ofstunning photographs recording the way of life of the largest group of uncultured lowland Indians in South America. The photographs by Victor Englebert are accompanied by text from the President of Survival International (the group that organised the show). Robin Hanbury-Tension. There will also be a small exhibition of Indian artefacts, some brought over from South America. whilst others have been made by Lothian schoolchildren from authentic materials. Maraca 4 Oct—16 Nov. The photographic results of a year-long expedition which involved two hundred experts from the Royal Geographical Society. who travelled to and then dissected a Brazilian rain forest. on an island in a tributary of the Amazon.

The photographic results of an extraordinary year-long expedition into darkest Brazil will be on show at Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Gardens from 4 October. The journey, undertaken by over two hundred experts in all scientific disciplines, makes anything from Ripping Yarns seem like a day trip to North Berwick. At the end of their trek the scientists camped on, and thoroughly dissected, a Brazilian rain forest located on an island in the of a tributary of the Amazon. Maraca records their findings there, whilst The Yanomani exhibition comprises a set of stunning photographic images of the largest group of unacculturated lowland Indians in South America. There will be a talk by the leader of the ecological survey of Maraca, Dr Jimmy Rafter, on 5 October at 3pm.
