Just beneath the surface of the Nevada desert, huge, stinking worm-like creatures are burrowing last. Attracted by the slightest noise or vibration, they make short work oi any humans unfortunate enough to cross their path. A road repair crew are wiped out, a camping couple get swallowed up and one old dude is so scared he climbs up an electricity pylon and dies oi thirst.
Bantering buddies Val and Earl (Bacon and Ward) first come across their new big problem when a strange tentacle is caught in their pick-up truck’s axle. Inevitany they meet up with a smart girl seismologist (Carter) and soon end up pole vaulting from rock to rock out of a very tight spot. Meanwhile the small town of Perfection is put under seige by the so called ‘graboids’, its oddball collection of inhabitants having to take refuge up on the roots of their houses and trailers. The local shopkeeper is swallowed up after his iridge starts rattling and a gun-happy outdoors couple only keep their unexpected house guests at bay by blasting away with every kind of weapon in their basement arrnoury. An escape to high ground becomes the only option . . .

A kind of way out west ‘Jaws’, ‘Tremors’ is a very attractive blend oi big monster fantasy and dry, unemphatic comedy with a pedigree which includes the producer of ‘The Terminator’ and the writers responsible for ‘Short Circuit'. In the effects department, the ‘graboids; assorted tentacles and teeth are impressively realised, while the appropriate level oi kinetic energy is delivered by some sustained jolts oi roilercoasting camerawork. This is the kind oi film where someone can say ‘Remember, no vibrations!’ only to follow with a shot of a kid on a pogo stick. At the same time the storyline is well enough written and performed to keep things way above the usual level of lumbering, unfunny spool. Bacon and Ward fit very engagingly into their blue collar personalities; the bright, boom-shot littered, desert locations make a change from monsterdom’s more typical blue filter shadows and the main action is served up with just the right combination of straight faces and otf-the-Richter-scale daltness. Nora Ephron‘s witty screenplay intelligently ponders the possibility of male/female friendship with or without romance. and guess which side wins. . .Annie Hall for the late 198(ls.with now-famous faked orgasm. I The Witches (PG) (Nicholas Rocg. US. 1990) Anjelica Huston. Mai Zetterling. Rowan Atkinson. 92 mins. Nine year-old Luke is warned by his Norwegian granny about the everprescnt threat posed by the existence of witches. which isn‘t much help actually because within the next half hour he stumbles on their annual convention in a small English hotel and gets himself changed into a mouse for his pains. A pleasing adaption of Roald Dahl‘s children‘s story has director Rocg (in unusually straightforward manner) creating a superior kids movie that has you rooting for the mice all the way. Lotsof fun. Wild-haired Mr Serious writes, directs, produces and takes the title role in this irreverently inventive biopic of the genius‘ early life. This Albert Einstein. born in Tasmania. not only split the atom. but also invented the electric guitar and hence rock’n‘roll. Like it or loathe it. this wildly silly romantic comedy looks set to be Australia‘s second most successful film to date. and its sly charm has won the hearts of audiences around the world.
