HATS OFF TO ROBERT
A nice aspect of the current vitality of the Glaswegian clubs scene is the ever-increasing number of nights catering for those with a taste for the out of the ordinary - how about, for instance, a club playing country music? It’s happening at The Shelter, it’s called The Stetson, and, as Robert Cavanagh oi Peach County, who have a residency there, explains, it’s not such an unlikely idea as you might think.
‘It just so happens that 1990 seems to have seen quite a revival in a new country sound,’ he says. ‘I think, to be honest, that New Country is a label that is being grabbed and clung onto by people who are looking for some kind of old-world alternative to all this acid,
hip-hop and house that’s floating around. Basically, we set this up to strike up some kind of live music alternative to all that, and it seems to be going down very well. The bar takings are phenomenal, taking more money than on any other night, so we can only gauge from that it’s a success}
While denying that The Stetson has any kind of relation to the maudlin sentimentality or tacky glamour of The Grand 01’ Opry, they do admit to an appeal which crosses style boundaries. ‘The kind of people who have turned up to the clubs solar have been anything from the traditional country fans—which usually means they’re aged about Gil-plus, they come along in lrilly shirts and jeans and really have a good night— they're a bloody supportive audience! Or, on the other hand, you get all the young guns about town who buy their clothes from Rodeo, who really just want to have a good dance and let themselves go. It’s the kind of atmosphere you might get at a ceilidh — maybe just slightly more civilised.’
Music ranges from janglin' guitar man Steve Earle to some of Elvis’ more rootsy, ‘Sun Sessions’ material; but definitely does not include ‘Stand By YourMan’. Never mind, you’ll just have to sing it yourself on the way home. (Andrea Baxter)
