Their runs at the Tramway in 1989. and Glasgow‘s King‘s Theatre at this year's Mayfcst. were more successful comtninglings of rock and theatre than they had a right to be. considering their constituent parts: ska with progressive tendencies. a deadpan chorus line parodying th'e idealised collective farm worker. hilarious dance routines. all tied together with an inventiveness and humour that is way ahead of the music itself. though the songs are never less than toe-tappingly enjoyable. Sheer fttn. Miss them not.

KNOCKIN’ 0N NICK
He has the looks of the last surviving Neanderthal man. He has a reputation as a bit of an awkward bugger, backed up by his notorious assault on a probing rock journalist. He entered a drugs rehabilitation centre in 1988 under the toll glare of media scrutiny. He can
variously’be seen as a misanthropist, a '
misogynist, an obscurantist. He is enigmatic and volatile and never dull. He is Nick Cave, one at rock’s most consistently iascinating iigures.
Cave first came to prominence in the late 19705 as a founder member of The Birthday Party, a seminal Melbourne band tamed tor their seriously unhinged bent. From what one critic termed the ‘Dionysiac excess’ of that group, Cave turned his hand to The Bad Seeds, who in 1984 released ‘From Her to Eternity’, a record that launched the career of Nick Cave as something approaching a melodramatic psychonc.
Subsequent years saw the tights, the drugs and albums with such nihilistic titles as ‘Kicking Against the Pricks' and ‘Your Funeral, My Trial’. Suspicions over the strange, twilight world of the Cave psyche were confirmed last summer when his first novel, ‘And the Ass Saw the Angel’ (released in paperback this month), was published. The book, a tale of inbreeding, religion and depravity, appeared to lay bare many oi Cave’s innermost troubles. In Edinburgh last August to promote it, he made clear his problems: ‘The image that has been
created around me is so monstrous that
it will be too much for (some critics) to be unprejudiced when they read my book!
The Bad Seeds’ sixth and latest album, ‘The Good Son’, is a smoother, less tortured version of Cave, a step back from the brutal extremes of his dabblings thus tar. Whetherthe near-civility of this latest work marks a turnaround from the poised-on-the-brink-ot-doom iatalism that has always streaked through the Cave outpourings remains to be seen. Perhaps these rare live appearances will otter a tantalising glimpse of the true nature of Cave's black heart. (Craig McLean)
