January: month ol postponed matches and the third round of the Scottish Cup. It’s the time when the Davids dust all their slingshots and the Goliaths, despite their boss's orders, don’t sleep very well. Last year this stage at the competition produced only one real upset, when lnvemess Caley slipped through 5-4 on penalties against Airdrie. ln lact we had to wait until the fourth round tor the real shocker at last season’s competition, when Celtic were drawn against Rangers. Who said the authorities would never have the
balls to do it? This year, Rangers have copped an
. easier draw, for starters anyhow. They
are at home to Dunlermllne (Tue 29). Celtic again have to travel to Forlar where they scraped through last year by the odd goal. The most attractive ties, however, are at Broomlield where Airdrie take on Hearts, and at Firhlll where Partick Thistle eventually get the chance to square up to lirst division leaders Falklrk. (The recent league llxture between the two was abandoned only a couple oi hours before the kick-oil.) Clydebank may have to rely on their memories of last year’s semi-final against Celtic tor a longtime to come -Ayr United at home may prove too much for the Kllbowie club. And, alter their remarkable exploits in the league recently, St Johnstone, who meet Berwick Rangers at home, would appear to be likely candidates for a good cup run. In 1989, they reached the semi-finals only to be soundly thrashed by Rangers alter lorcing a replay. The ’Gers also put them out last year, in the third round.
So, who’s going to to tilt the trophy in 1991? Celtic, because it’s about time they had some good fortune and because I've got a tenner on them. (Ross Parsons)
