I Derkman (15) (Sam Raimi. US. 1990) Liam Neeson. Frances McCormand. Colin Friels. Larry Drake. 91 mins. Mr Evil Dead with major studio funding has a ball. barking back to the Hammer Phantom Of The Opera genre. but still exploiting his distinctively fast-moving. schlock-comedy instincts. Neeson is wonderful. even touching. as the genetic scientist who develops a recipe for temporary faces just in time to avenge

himselfon the gangsters who removed his

own rugged features with acid: and Danny Elfman (who scored Batman and Dick Tracy) provides another great soundtrack. Glasgow: Grosvenor.

I Days Of Eclipse ( 15) (Alexandr Sokurov, USSR. I988) A newly graduated doctor arrives in 'I'urkmenia from Moscow. but finds his every experience drawing him towards a sense of despair. I Deed Ringers (18) (David Cronenberg. US. 1988) Jeremy Irons. Genevieve Bujold. Heidi Palleske. l 15 mins. Extraordinary examintion ofsexual jealousy on identical twins. Irons plays gynaecologists. arrogant Elliot and the more studious Beverly Mantle. who fall in love with fading actress Claire Niveau when their clinic treats her infertility. I Despair ( 15) (Rainer Werner Fassbinder. West Germany France. 1978) Dirk Bogarde. Andrea Ferrcol. Volker Spengler. 119 mins. Bogarde‘s last filmfor twelve years was written by Tom Stoppard from Nabokov-‘s novel. and he is splendid

in the role of Hermann Hermann. whose

dappelganger fantasy drives him over the brink of insanity. but despite all the talents on board. there's a disappointing lack of consistency and over-indulgence about what might have been a great movie. Glasgow: GET.

1 I Diner(15) (Barry Levinson. US. 1982) Mickey Rourke. Ellen Barkin. Steve 3 Guttenberg. 110 mins. Fresh and acutely

observed rites of passage story focusing on a group of adolescent friends who hangout together in the late 19505. The universality of their growing pains is nicely detailed and affectionately acted by a cast offuture luminaries. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER

Not Without My Daughter (12) (Brian Gilbert, US, 1990) Sally Field, Alfred

Molina, Sheila Rosenthal, Roshan Seth. 115 min. Michigan, 1984, and a

true story is just waiting to unfold. Betty

Mahmoody is as happy in her middle-class life as anyone with her dress sense ever could be. Hubby ‘Moody’ ls big, hairy and huggable, her daughter Mahtob is sugar-sweet and while the home may be small, It is choc-a-bioc with wonderful symbols of the consumer society. But trouble is in store, for Moody is Iranian, and he wants to take the iamin home to meet his folks.

From the moment Betty first meets her in-Iaws at Tehran airport, you know that there are going to be misunderstandings. Moody becomes increasingly distant and when he capitulates to his family‘s demands to embrace the Islamic state, Betty finds herself prisoner in an alien society where women are considered to be thelrhusband’s chattels. Betty and Mahtob seem destined fora life of indoctrination and servitude, unless the stereotypical American mom can

~ overcome her dependence on Moody,

accept the help of the one nice (if greasy) Iranian, thwart the dastardly

i

heathen and get home safely with her daughter.

Fairy-tale stuff for Sally Field, who stars as Betty—the story of one woman's struggle against adversity. Or it could have been. But this was made at a time when Iran was still the big bad wolf of the Middle East and is

straightforward xenophobia,

unsophisticated and parochial. Where the Mahmoody character could have grown through the film,

, Fieldremainsresolutelylimp, gaining i nota smidgenfrom herexperiences. t Any opportunity to examine the most

insignificant of insights to the Islamic culture is discarded in favour of the sort of detail designed to provoke ' prejudice. The Israeli locations, ironically substituting for Iran, are

' poorly shot. And while ‘certain events ; have been Iictionalised forthe purpose 3 of dramatic clarity’, the film has about

as much narrative drive as a Sinclair C5. (Thom Dibdln)

Val Kilmer. Meg Ryan. Kyle MacLachlan. Kevin Dillon. Frank Whalley. 141 mins. It's 1966. andJim Morrison. aspiring poet and film-maker. joins a band ad transforms himself into the Dionysus of the Love Generation. From that point on. there's no let-up until his bathtime demise as an overweight alcoholic. aged 27. Kilmcr‘s superb characterisation as Morrison dominates to such an extent that the other actors struggle to assert themselves even one-dimensionally. and little insight is given into what fired Morrison's self-destructive genius. Still. Stone's ‘tits 'n' acid' version ofThe Doors' history. while selective and highly inaccurate. is never boring. Glasgow: ()deon.

I DrNo(PG) (Terence Young. UK. 1962) Sean Connery. Ursula Andress. Joseph Wiseman. Jack Lord. 105 mins. The first Bond movie. and a vintage one at that. A very young-looking and Scots-sounding Connery works his charming (and in hindsight somewhat camp) way through the diabolical back passageways of Dr No's evil empire and the requisite number of floozies. pausing only to take out the occasional tarantula and take in the Caribbean scenery. To say nothing of Ms Andress' spectacular appearance on the beach with that conch shell. . .Theydon't make 'em like they used to. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
