The Royal Shakespeare Company comes direct from Stratford’s The Other Place to an unfamiliar venue on the theatre circuit. with the first of two plays directed by Trevor Nunn. Based on a Heinrich Mann novel. The Blue Angel isa new musical by Pam Gems using period songs from the 1920s and about a teacher who falls in love with a nightclub singer. See preview.

The Snow Queen Until Sat 18 Jan. 7pm. £3—£7. Audio described perormance on Thurs 16 Jan. This year‘s Myles Rudge panto is based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale about little Gerda who battles through ice and snow to rescue her brother from the clutches of the Snow Queen. Giles Havergal directs and it‘s Julian McGowan‘s turn to get out the primary clours for the design. Look out for Ashley Jensen who graduates from last year’s panto at the Tron to join the cast at the Citz.

Wildcat‘s pantomime is written by the regular team of David MacLennan and Dave Anderson and this year they make use of a 25-piece Gamelan to provide an atmospheric percussive backdrop. The story concerns a king‘s inability to get one ofhis daughters to smile. See review.

The latest multi-media spectacular from Test Dept inaugurates Dowanhill Church as a theatre venue (although it will be a while before the renovation work is complete). Appropriately. the production's subject matter is the rise of Christianity from Pagan times to the present-day search for unity.

Glitzy large-scale panto first seen in Edinburgh and said to be Stanley Baxter's last ever. The white mice turn into real Shetland ponies and there‘s a lot of attention paid to the telling of the story. Last year some of Baxter‘s material wasn't as sharp as it could have been. but there were some nice comic turns and strong support especially from the women in the company. And could you turn down your last opportunity to see such a major figure ofthe Scottish stage?

The One-Sided Wall Wed 11 Dec. 7.30pm. £1 .5()(£1). Theatre Cryptic. a new student company. presents this psychiatric hospital drama by Janet Cresswell and Niki Johnson — a play in which yourvery own Theatre Editor appeared when the original touring company found itself short ofa non-speaking actor one night at Edinburgh‘s Traverse. From my position on stage it seemed powerful stuff. all the more so for being based on Cresswell's real life experience of Broadmoor; an experience which she has yet to escape. The script is published in Plays by Women: Eight(Methuen £6.99).
