TALKING BALLS

Those of you with long and unforgiving memories will still be laughing at my iootball predictions at this time last year. So bizarre were my forecasts (Aberdeen tor the league!) that I was temporarily relieved oi my duties on grounds at suspected insanity. Undeterred, the patched-up crystal ball is back for the new season and the blurred images reveal a tamiliar story. Rangers will lilt the title, with Celtic their closest challengers. Rangers' combination of seasoned Intematlonals and strength In depth should cut a swathe through a distinctly interior Premier Division, in what looks

like being Its iinal year.

Fixture pile-ups should hinder any lengthy Scottish involvement In Europe, although tor the domestic cups there are a number oi useiul

. candidates capable oi raising their

game tor the knock-out Ionnat. Hearts’ trophy cupboard has Iain undisturbed longer than Tutankhamen’s tomb, but I fancy .Ioe Jordan’s canny purchases on a tight budget could strengthen the side suiiiciently to pick up some silverware.

Both oi the newly-promoted teams look out oi their depth. Simon Stalnrod's Dundee tioundered in the First Division, being promoted despite themselves, while Partick Thistle look like struggling to be anything more than the butt oi the usual old jokes. Then again. what do I know? (Torn Lappin)

League placings come May (just maybe)
