Unelassifiable piece of independent American moviemaking which doesn't have a plot as such; instead it providesa snapshot of over 100 ‘slackers‘ - young. happy-go-lucky drifters — as they get through their daily lives. Structured as a monumental relay (each character briefly appears. meets the next. and so on). it has a loose. experimental. almost jazzy format that you‘ll either love or hate. Elegant comedy of genteel period manners. which although not ofthi genre one associates with Bergman is nevertheless handled with a good deal of detached wit and sophistication. With an element of uncontrived human compassion lurking throughout the gloriously expensive action sequences. as Swarzenegger‘s cyborg develops human feelings. this is more than just a $100 million fairground ride. Super Arabian Nights fantasy has native boy Sabu outwitting evil Grand Vizier Conrad Veidt with the help of a magic carpet and a rather splendid genie (played by silent director Ingram).
