Here‘s one example of a grinning pogomachine outstripping admittedly limited

expectations with each successive storming

release. It's quite possible that their new LP

Empire Of The Senseless might even prove compulsive listening. Support from a group of giant-loving girls taking their name from Almodovar's Women On The Verge OfA Nervous Breakdown.

I Delicious Monster and The Bachelor Pad King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street.

; 221 5279. 9pm. £3. Along with PJ Harvey and Sidi Bou Said. Delicious Monster's Rachel Mayfield is demonstrating that women don‘t have to make a cartoon of

j themselves to accentuate their individuality

and talent. Like a cross between The Sundays

and somebody interesting. both Delicious Monster‘s singles so far have been crazed

emotional exultant pop. Plus mad

' psychedelic pop meanderings from The Bachelor Pad.

I John Martyn Queen‘s Hall. South Clerk Street. 668 2019. 7.30pm. £8.50. Never mind about this ‘secret hero' Paul Brady John Martyn's been making grown-up and often challenging music for quarter of a century now. but is too often looked on as part of the furniture than as the historically important figure he is. To be fair. though. Martyn himself has made a habit of not taking paths that might bump up his profile. His new LP. Couldn '! Love You More. features new versions of his best-known songs by an impeccably tasteful and sometimes rather too laid-back band. Perhaps the songs, will burn a little more fiercely live.

I The Seats, Dog and The Dreaming Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 9pm. £3. Should be a good package. topped as it is by Edinburgh's eclectic and totally unclassifiable (Eat) The Seats. If you can imagine the middle line between The Levellers and The Doors. that’s where Dog are squatting. and The Dreaming are currently trying to live down ‘crusty‘ comparisons.

I Man’s Voice Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 10pm. Free. Somewhat ethereal band compared. at one time or another. with The Blue Nile.
