A character play about the vivacious. yet unfortunate Elizabeth Stuart. sister of Charles 1 and known as Elizabeth of Bohemia. The Palace is Open from 9.30am to 6.30pm (2—6.30pm. Sundays) and is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots who later used it as a B&B on her way from Edinburgh to Stirling.
I ROUNO BRITAIN YACHTINC EVENT Sat
17. Leith docks. Free. Twenty-four yachts taking part in the round-Britain sailing rally. the first of its kind to circum— navigate the island of Britain. set off from the harbour at 2pm. From there they will be sailing the 150 nautical miles to Buckie. leaving on the 21st. The more intrepid among the party will be going round the top of Caithness to Ullapool. but the wimps will be dodging down through the Caledonian Canal to Craobh Haven.

I CULLOOEN MOOR BATTLE Sat l7/Sun 18. 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Culloden Visitor Centre. Culloden Moor. 5 miles east of Inverness on the B9006. Tel 0463 790607. £1.50 (80p). Members of the White Cockade Society go through their paces. leading tours of the battlefield where. on 16 April 1746. the last major battle was fought on mainland Britain. The battle lasted 40 minutes and left 1200 of Bonny Prince Charlie‘s men dead to 310 of Cumberland‘s army. and Jacobite hopes crushed. The battlefield has been restored to its original moorland state and is open daily from 10am to 4pm. You can also see the Graves of the Clans. the Well of the Dead. the Memorial Cairn with the inscription ‘The English were buried here’ and the Cumberland Stone from which the victorious Duke is said to have viewed the scene. The visitors centre has been enlarged and improved to include a colourful historic display auditorium. Also self-service restaurant with home baking.
I FEIS AN EILEIN Skye. Mon l2—Sat 24. Various venues on Skye. The Skye Festival of Music and Theatre is hardly a day out. more like a week if you’ve the time. The Feis is based at the Gaelic College at Sabhal Mor Ostaig in south Skye. (1 mile north of Armadale) but events take place all over the island. Evening events at the SMO include folk music with Makvirag from Hungary and Mabsant from Wales (Mon 19). Alison Kinnaird on the harp and the Gaelic singer Christine Primrose on Thurs 22. The countryside park are keen to promote their ranger facilities, hence this day of exhibitions, guided walks and craft stalls. Four walks in all: woodland management (from both a historical and modern perspective), a kids walk to find a few wee beasties, a look at the medicinal and magic herbs found wild in the woodland and a wander round the 18th century walled gardens. A marquee on the lawns will have craft exhibitions, including lace making, horn carving, basket weaving and pottery. Tea, coffee and the all-important home baking will be available in the hunting lodge (built by William Adam for the Dukes of Hamilton and completed in 1743) as well as creche facilities for three to eight-year-olds so you can wander the woods. The hunting lodge, kennel house and grounds are open all year round and are well worth a visit. There is a small charge for the visitors centre which provides a vivid portrayal of the 18th century ‘characters’ who helped build
Chatelherault.
HAHBCIIH FESTIVAL: Fri 16-Sun 18. All day. Irvine Harbourside and Beach Pa.
Mostly free. Excellent day-material, with family entertainment, marching bands, displays, Highland Dancing, a German beer night and a charity horse show. Musical entertainment will include traditional jazz, Oompah bands, pipes and drums as well as your regular yee-ha Country and Western bands and karaoke. Hong Kong-style Dragon Boat racing will take place in the harbour (Chris Patten will not be present). The 40ft canoes are paddled by crews of up to 21 people to the beat of a drum. For the adventurous, a Slim-high bungee-

An exciting and fun-filled week ofcircus type entertainments from the visually stunning Circo Berserko. the Cirque Du Pays De Galles and the ever risque Mischief La- Bas. The only animals are human but expect some wacky funsters every afternoon at 1pm. 2pm, 3pm. and 4pm. Morning workshops will introduce your kids to the wild ways of the circus. while the evening shows are more likely to provide some grown up entertainment. Mon: Tea Dance (7—10pm). I ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP Strathclyde Country Park. Thurs 15-Sun 18. from 9.30am. Strathclyde Loch. Strathclyde Country Park. Motherwell. 0698 266155. Free. The 21st UK amateur rowing championships should provide some exciting thrills on the water over these three days. but the park is always worth a visit with loads of things to do. On Sun 18 you can leave the kiddies to get on with a kite-making workshop (1 lam—noon). All the materials they will need are provided free but you'll need to book a place. On Sat 24 and Sun 25 there‘s paragliding on the loch (weather permitting). For their £11.60. over 12s get to go out on a special powerboat and fly up to over 150ft on the end of a winch. suspended from a parachute. Among the park‘s many attractions are mountain bike hire. guided walks round the nature trails. riding. windsurfing and dingy sailing.
