Take it to

the

Bridge of on

The Aberdeen Alternative Festival has grown into a major event which has helped to jump-start a healthy arts scene in the city. Eddie Gibb looks at this year’s line-up.

It would be interesting to know if James Brown is aware that Scotland is not a pan of England. let alone if he has i the first clue where to find Aberdeen on the map. But hopefully someone in his entourage does. because next week the man they call the Godfather of Soul is due to play the Granite City‘s 7000- capacity exhibition centre.

Not quite the Harlem Apollo maybe. but it should be a hot night. In securing L the services of the Funky One. respect

; is due to the organisers of the Aberdeen , T Alternative Festival. Not only will it be ? his only British date this year. but the

5 first time ever he plays Scotland. Even

. to being surprised when Brown‘s

people faxed the office saying their

festival director Duncan Hendry admits

man was going to be in Europe in October and yes. he would do the gig. Though the James Brown concert will .

festival. Hendry has assembled a programme of decent-sized music and

comedy acts. which includes names as

diverse as Lily Savage. Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Lester Bowie's Brass

Fantasy.

However. though it’s obviously better that the big names come to town rather than giving the north east a miss. there

3 is a feeling locally that Aberdeen needs

' to attend to nurturing its horne-grown

talent. ‘What we get is toured at.‘ says

} Bryan Angus. administrator of local - theatre group Shiftwork and a former festival organiser. ‘The festival has

done an enormous job in the twelve years it’s been on the go. What I'd like

i to see it do more is becoming a focus of

local musicians and community groups.‘ The flipside of the festival programme

is Native. a series of workshops and

events run by local artists for local people. At the centre of attempts to develop local talent. particularly in music and theatre. is the Lemon Tree. the new arts venue which opened last

year. It has commissioned its first play.

Julie Allardyt'e by Aberdeen writer

Duncan McLean. and Lemon Tree

administrator Shona Powell hopes to

fund a new piece of work every year. ‘l‘m interested in developing the

venue as a resource.‘ she says. ‘We will

be holding workshops and open

rehearsals. Aberdeen has no resident

- theatre company and we hope this will encourage moves to establish one in the ' elty.‘

The recently-formed Shiftwork.

probably the closest thing Aberdeen

has to a resident company. is putting on its first full production at the festival. Inside Out is a piece of physical theatre which Angus describes as ‘a trip to the comic Twilight Zone‘ involving. amongst other things. a wedding dress

and a wheelie bin.

Some ofthe workshop sessions during

the festival. on theatre design. will be used to recruit people to work on the . set for Boilerhouse's production of

Julie Allurdyt‘e. which looks at the

impact of the oil industry on the north

east through the eyes of one woman. The Lemon Tree opened in April last year but Powell says it was the festival that really established the venue among people who might have been put off by

i the conjunction of the words ‘arts' and '. ‘centre‘. In the first year it established

itselfas a music venue and fast became a favourite venue for Aberdeen's

‘electric ceilidh‘ scene which blends

elements of Celtic folk and punky

t thrash.

Bands like The Dreaming. The Lorelei

? and The Dawntreadcrs attract a strong

5 local following and are all booked to

play the festival. Charlie Love of The Dreaming complains that the Scottish music industry tends not to bother with Aberdeen but hopes that James Brown might be enough of a draw for them to make the trip north. ‘Agents and managers haven‘t really latched on to the fact that there is a really vibrant music scene up here.‘ Love says. ‘The festival‘s high profile events will hopefully drag them up and then we will grab them while they are here.‘ The Aberdeen Alternative Festival runs 14—24 October.
