The Aberdeen Alternative Festival has grown into a major event which has helped to jump-start a healthy arts scene in the city. Eddie Gibb looks at this year’s line-up.
It would be interesting to know if James Brown is aware that Scotland is not a pan of England. let alone if he has i the first clue where to find Aberdeen on the map. But hopefully someone in his entourage does. because next week the man they call the Godfather of Soul is due to play the Granite City‘s 7000- capacity exhibition centre.

local musicians and community groups.‘ The flipside of the festival programme
is Native. a series of workshops and
events run by local artists for local people. At the centre of attempts to develop local talent. particularly in music and theatre. is the Lemon Tree. the new arts venue which opened last
year. It has commissioned its first play.

be holding workshops and open
rehearsals. Aberdeen has no resident

east through the eyes of one woman. The Lemon Tree opened in April last year but Powell says it was the festival that really established the venue among people who might have been put off by

play the festival. Charlie Love of The Dreaming complains that the Scottish music industry tends not to bother with Aberdeen but hopes that James Brown might be enough of a draw for them to make the trip north. ‘Agents and managers haven‘t really latched on to the fact that there is a really vibrant music scene up here.‘ Love says. ‘The festival‘s high profile events will hopefully drag them up and then we will grab them while they are here.‘ The Aberdeen Alternative Festival runs 14—24 October.
