I Michel Petrucciani Queen‘s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. 8.30pm. £12.50. £8.50 (concessions £4 if available on night). SATURDAY 12

I Phil Bancrort’s Big Shebang The 13th Note. 80 Glassford Street. 887 4733. 9.30pm. £4 (£3). This band made its debut at the Queen’s Hall late last year. and did enough to suggest that there were promising directions emerging from the saxophonist’s particular take on the currently endemic interest in fusing jazz with folk influences. it was surprisingly Garbarek-like in places - surprising only in the sense that Phil normally doesn’t sound that way at all and highly original in others. The saxman is aided by pianist Brian Kellock. guitarist Kevin MacKenzie, Simon Thorpe on bass. and brother Tom on drums.

I John Murray Big Band Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 6112. 2-5pm. £1. Mainstream.

I George Penman’s Jamnen Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 6112. 8.30pm—midnight. £4. Leading Dixieland band. plus guests.

I Strathclyde University Big Band Stevenson Hall. RSAMD. 100 Renfrew Street. 332 5057. £5 (£3). Big band fans can wander across town from the afternoon session for yet another helping here, when John Davies leads the Strathclyde University Big Band (not the same outfit as SYJO) in a mix of standards and more contemporary charts.

Edinburgh

I Trumpets tlo End Tron Jazz Cellar. Tron Tavern and Ceilidh House. Hunter Square (off High Street). 220 1550. 8.30—11pm. £3 (£2). Only two of them. actually. and both familiar figures at the club. Eddie Severn and Donald Corbett are the hommen, joined by Robert Pettigrew on piano, Brian Shiels on bass. and drummer Keith Haldane in a bop-based quintet mixing their own writing with arrangements of classic material.

MONDAY 14

Glasgow

I St Valentine’s Concert Victorian Bar. Tron Theatre. 552 4267. 9pm. £2.50 (£2). No line-up details as yet. but Glasgow Jazz Services promise ‘something appropriate’ for the occasion.

I lit Carey’s Jan Band Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 6112. 9pm-midnight. £2. Traditional.

Edinburgh

I Graig Mchturdo in That Swing Thang Brunton Theatre. Musselburgh. 665 2240. 7.30pm. £7 (£5). A special St Valentine’s show from the singer. leaning heavily on the romantic side of his work. Might be advisable to check ticket availability if you are not booking in advance.

WEDNESDAY 16

I Carol Kidd City Hall, Candleriggs. 227 5511. 8pm. £12.50, £10 (£6). The singer is always assured of a warm welcome in Glasgow. and includes a number of hometown faces in her expanded band for this short tour under the auspices of Assembly Direct. The band is aimed at generating a bigger. punchier sound than her superb trio. with Brian Kellock on

piano. guitarists Nigel Clark and Dominic Ashworth. saxophonist Herbie Longalong. Fraser Spiers on harmonica. and a rhythm section of Ronnie Rae on bass and Tony McLennan on drums. They play the Music Hall in Aberdeen (0224 641122. 8pm. £11.50. £9.50 [£6]) on Thurs l7. and Edinburgh on Friday (see below).

I Sandy Taylor and Henry Fullerton Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 6112. 8.30pm. £1. Mainstream piano and bass duo. plus guests.

Edinburgh

I Bill Simpson Quartet Tron Jazz Cellar. Tron Tavern and Ceilidh House. Hunter Square (off High Street). 220 1550. 8.30—11pm. £3 (£2). Look for a mixture ofjazz standards and 60s Blue Note material from the Edinburgh-based saxophonist.

I Fat Sam‘s Band Fat Sam's Downtown Diner. 56—58 Fountainbridge. 228 3111. 7.30pm—midnight. Buffet dinner £14.95. Normally this regular fixture on the Edinburgh restaurant scene is confined to the Residencies section below. but this particular evening marks the band’s 9th anniversary. and they will be joined by a fair old number of special guests to celebrate the fact.

THURSDAY 17 Edinburgh

I Evan Parker and Chick lyall The Studios. BBC. Queen Street. 668 2019. 8pm. £6.50 (£4). A double bill of solo improvisations to launch Assembly Direct’s second Srnllldtfllc’t‘k series. See preview.

SATURDAY 19

Glasgow

I Martin Taylor Paisley Arts Centre. New Street. Paisley. 887 1010. 8pm. £6 (£3). This short tour may be the last chance to hear the guitarist in his brilliant solo set for a while. at least in this country. although he plans to tour later in the year with a new band. Spirit of Django. which features local guitarist John Goldie (in action tonight with Brian Shiels see below) alongside Londoners Dave O’Higgins (saxes) and Alex Dankworth (bass). Martin also plays at The Lemon Tree in Aberdeen (Sun 20). the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy (Fri 25). and the Mitchell Theatre in Glasgow (Sat 26). I Brian Shiels Trio The 13th Note. 80 Glassford Street. 887 4733. 9.30pm. £4 (£3). Shiels is one of the best bass players in the country. and has been working with a quintet of late. but this will be a fine chance to hear him in the more intimate context of a smaller group. with guitarist John Goldie and drummer Dave Swanson. I John Murray Big Band Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 6112. 2—5pm. £1. Mainstream.

I George Penman's Janinen Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 6112. 8.30pm—midnight. £4. Dixieland.
