The first of two days devoted to Music Theatre. beginning with a public forum on that subject in the Guinness Room (10am, admission free). The main evening programme (Stevenson Hall. 7.30pm. £5 [£3]) is a collaborative piece based on the work of William Blake. Seven Proverbs of Hell, written by Amanda Collins. Jan Feddersen. Jane Gardner. John Irvine. David Paul Jones. Selina Kay and Charles l.yall. and played by Academy Nowl. There is a public rehearsal of the work at 2pm (Stevenson Hall. admission free). The series continues on Fri 6 with a programme sung by Voices of Academy Nowl. including a new work by Thomas Wilson. and music theatre by Peter Maxwell Davies (Stevenson Hall. 7.30pm. £5 [£3]).

I Alison Brown Quartet The Ferry. 7pm. £7 (£5). One of the most intriguing of the artists in the country strand of the programme. The banjo player and guitarist (who led Michelle Shocked‘s touring band for a time) takes a distinctly contemporary and highly individual approach to bluegrass and country.
I The Flying Bulgar [leaner Band The Ferry.
10pm. £7 (£5). Klezmer has been described as Jewish soul music. and avant-garde jazzman Don Byron has demonstrated that it need not be hidebound by tradition. This lot also come at the music with a distinctly
irreverent. jazz-influenced
perspective. and could be one of the hidden gems of the festival.
