It‘s been a couple of years since saxman Courtney Pine last visited these parts. fronting a slamming American jazz-funk outfit. and his return is a welcome one. This time around, he will lead a four-piece semi- acoustic jazz group featuring guitarist Cameron Pierre and a new bass and drums team. but will also add a couple of Dls to the tnix. using only acoustic jazz sources. He admits he doesn’t quite know exactly what it will sound like. but he has never been one to settle for the tried and tested when there is something new to check out. An extra date has been added since Assembly Direct’s original Jazz Directions brochure was printed. at The Music Hall in Aberdeen on Sat 18, where he will be one of the principal attractions in this month‘s Aberdeen Jazz Month promotion.

Simon Van Der Walt (best known as the regular trumpet dude in That Swing Thang) makes an instant return to The Tron (see Sun 19) as director of the Napier University Big Band. which certainly bore his distinctive stamp when I last heard them. Not a precision outfit. perhaps. but the close contact and informal atmosphere should help them to relax and swing their way through some attractive charts.
