Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight Until 27 Aug. Bringing mental health out of society's shadows. this multi-media exhibition examines attitudes to mental illness through the centuries. from the days of quack remedies to today's care in the community policies. In the gallery's centre hall. an interactive cube highlights the creativity of famous people who have experienced mental illness. including Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Sylvia Plath and Vincent van Gogh.

Slip Of The Tongue Until 22 Apr. An eye- opening. sense-stimulating exhibition of work by one of the most influential artists of her generation. Janine Antoni. For the first time. Scotland will be able to consume the New York-based artist’s work. including Gnaw. two 6001b cubes. one moulded from lard. the other from chocolate. Antoni chewed the works and reshaped the masticated excess into a display ofchocolate hearts and lard-based lipsticks. See Lectures.

GALLERY NEWS
Five months ago an electrical fault in the store room of the Fruitmarket Gallery started a fire. It destroyed the contents of the store room, damaged the CT New Contemporaries exhibition and swept upstairs to the office where the intense heat melted computers, discs and telephones and barbecued important documents. Caroline lleill, publicity officer, remembers the devastation that greeted her on the day of the fire.
‘The end wall of the downstairs gallery had totally disintegrated and because the firemen had to break windows in the roof to bring down the temperature it looked like a huge bomb had dropped from the sky.’
The director, Graeme Murray, gallery staff and even board members rolled up their sleeves and pitched in with the firemen to clear the rubble. ‘Everyone pulled together,’ says Caroline. ‘We operate very much as a family at the Fruitmarket and the fire was a real shock.’
Amazingly, the gallery opened its bookshop and cafe to the public only ten days after the fire but temporary office accommodation had to be found for the administrative staff. Fire doors prevented the exhibition from going up in flames but smoke seeping through the air vents meant a team of conservators were brought in to clean the work for the next leg of its tour.
A false wall was built where the fire had started and arrangements for the next show went ahead, despite a lack of proper heating and light. ‘Our temporary office had no computer for ages and my files were black and stank of smoke but we were determined the Aboriginal show would open on 2 December,’ says Caroline.
flow that finishing touches to the redecorating are almost complete, everyone can move back to the gallery for the Textiles and New Technology - 2010 exhibition opening on 15 April. The show takes a look at the fusion of new technology with textile tradltlons and anticipates exciting new developments for the 21 st century. (Gill Roth)
