RINGS ON HER FINGERS
Katherine Morrison has always been used to lighting challenges. Her most significant battle was in 1989 when she tried to gain her own promoting licence. Three times in as many years she applied to the Scottish Boxing Area Council — three times they delivered a swift rebuttal. In 1991, Morrison was so frustrated with the
politics of Scottish boxing that she took her case to the British Boxing Board of Control in London. They
issued a licence straight away, making her Europe’s only female boxing promoter.
' More recently, Morrison’s biggest
l fight has been to defend the name of
boxing. The fight world is only lust . recovering from the chaos of last month’s WBO super-middleweight title between lligel Benn and Gerald McClellan. The fight became national news when a blood clot burst 1n McClellan’s brain during the fight. lie collapsed and ended up in a coma that 5 he is only now staggering out of.
Such is the nature of boxing that it is 9 always going to have its critics and ' plaudits. In the blue corner is the British Medical Association, who claim that although other sports can be dangerous, only boxing has the stated aim of knocking your opponent out in order to win. They back up their theory with statistics from 1985 to 1992. In that period nine boxers have died from their injuries, and another nine have had major surgery for brain haemorrhages and detached retinas. For many, boxing is nothing more than legalised violence and those who light only do so after being promised false dreams by blood-money thirsty promoters.
In the red corner, Morrison is ready to take on all challengers: ‘If it was legallsed violence than they’d be taking knives and hammers into the ring. Obviously I’m worried about such a tragedy affecting our boys, but first of all they’ve got to look after themselves, be fit and pass the

medicals. I think it’s extremely patronising to call boxers stupid, many are clever boys and it’s up to them if they want to do it. Nobody forces them into the ring and they know the downfalls.’
Morrison takes offence to the accusation that she is a parasite living off the sport’s danger. Tragedy, she believes, does not happen too often in boxing and Morrison is angry that the sport is the popular whipping boy in the league of dangerous sports.

as boxing. ln motor-racing who was to blame for Ayrton Senna’s death? The company, the sponsors or the driver? Sure they changed the safety rules after he died but they still drive at 180 mph don’t they? It’s anybody’s right to compete in the sport of their choice, and my boxers have the right to fight if they want.’
So blows continue to rain in on both sides of the argument. The eternal problem is that be it the promoter or the neurosurgeon, somebody is going to be left picking up the pieces of broken dreams. (Philip Dorward)
