Kenny Logan-and Annabel road to promote Love Tennis

Scottish tennis number one Boss i Matheson has just finished Britain’s

annual tennis gala, Wimbledon. He

* didn’t play Agassi or Sampras. The nearest he got was practising on the

same court as them. Is it a cruel jibe to say that’s as close as he’ll get?

year-old, ‘Agassi’s 239 ranking points above me so it will be a while before l i play him. You have to remember that

f they have been on the tour for five

3 years more than me. I’ll never be the

best but if 1 can reach the top 100 out of 1400 players worldwide then I’ll be happvf

Matheson is a proud Scot who ironically isn’t playing in the Scottish

climate to the

Championships. Caught between the

7 devil and the deep green grass,

Matheson has to play a ranking event

that will hopefully put him higher up the world list. He believes he is of

more use to Scotland if he can reach

that level because hopefully it will

inspire other young Scots to play

That, and the sheer enjoyment of the game is the premise behind Love

Tennis, which comes to Scottish

tennis clubs this July. Love Tennis aims to encourage more people, both young and old, to take up tennis through offering free coaching. Oh, and a child prodigy wouldn’t go amiss. Matheson hopes it will show that tennis is not just about the Centre Court.

‘In Scotland we need to be able to produce players who, when they turn eighteen, are good enough to turn

professional. Currently we can’t even

we have of getting any champions out of that? The problem in Britain is that

turn out one a year, so what chance do

we take an interest in tennis only

when Wimbledon is on. The tennis

. season lasts eleven months of the ‘Not really,’ claims the diplomatic 25-t

year, not two weeks. Love Tennis will show that and demonstrate that it’s an enjoyable sport for all.’ (Philip Dorward)

love Tennis takes place on Sat 22 July ;

at Scatstoun leisure Centre, Deans Drive, Glasgow, 9am; Craiglockhart Tennis Centre, Calinton Road, Edinburgh, 10. 303m; Cannochy National Tennis Centre, Stirling University, Stirling, noon.
