Glasgow I 1995 Glasgow Ale Festival The
Arches. Midland Street. Thirsty beer drinkers will be raising their glasses in salute to CAMRA Thursday 21—Saturday 23 as the second Glasgow Ale Festival rolls out the barrel and starts pouring the pints. Last year's event. the first since 1987. saw 2.500 beer lovers pass through the portals of The Arches in search ol’ some amber nectar.

was only one pub within their catchment area that sold cask conditioned ale; today. and to a large part thanks to CAM RA's efforts. there are over 200. Even the big brewery conglomerates are beginning to realise that cask conditioned ales are a growth area. with Whitbread. Scottish Courage and Scottish Brewers all producing seasonal cask ales. Gavin Harvey. the Festival‘s beer manager. reckons that the increased popularity ol’ real ale will be reflected in a larger crowd at this year‘s Festival with an estimated gate of 3.500 over the three days. While this isn't quite in the same league as the Great British Beer Festival. which was held in the ()Iympia in London recently attracting 42.000 people. CAMRA hopes that within four years the event
will have grown to the stage where they ,
will be able to hold a Great Scottish
Beer Festival.
In the meantime punters can look forward to trying the Cottage Brewery‘s Norman‘s Conquest. a 7 per cent ABV dark beer that was voted the Champion Beer of Britain in London and Fraoch. a beer brewed using heather rather than hops. and there will be representation from all the Scottish brewers including Caledonian. Belhaven. Broughton. Maclays. Orkney and Harviestoun who are producing an exclusive special Festival brew — a golden coloured 3.8 per cent ABV bitter called 2lst Birthday Ale. The threatened Glaschu Brewery. the lirst new brewery in
Glasgow in over a century. will be contributing what is possibly one of their last brews and keep a lookout for Btrchan (iold from the new .-\berdecnshirc Ales Brewery. All in all the organisers are hoping to have around too British beers available on draught and 50 foreign beers from most corners of the globe.
