Valery Ponomarev
In 1973, Russian bop trumpeter Valery - Ponomarev boarded a plane to Home using talse papers, and stepped into another musical world. lie made his way directly to the hub of his chosen style, llew York City, and paid some dues betore being admitted into the most celebrated oi all bop’s inner sanctums, the late Art Blaltey’s Jazz Messengers, in 1977.
‘I used to say in Moscow i would play with Art one day, and everyone thought I was crazy. I sat in with his band at the Five Spot one night, and Art was amazed that here was someone trom a totally diiterent culture who played his exact style and repertoire. lie said i would join his band someday - I thought he was just being polite, but when Bill llardman lett, he called me, and the tour years I was with him left me much better equipped to deal with tile, not just music.’
lie set up his Universal Language band in 1980, and has made several tine recordings which underline his convincing command at the bop idiom.

ills iron dates are with Russell Cowieson (sax), David Milligan (piano), Brian Shiels (bass), and Bill lter (drums), who set up the gig. Bill’s own Saturday residence in the Cellar Bar, Chambers Street is expanded to include Monday and Wednesday tor the Fringe, and he also launches a new date at Walkers, Shandwiclt Place, irom Thurs B (10.30pm, tree). The Festival of British Youth Orchestras is now well-established. but has never been Content to rest on its Iaurels. Expansions both large (a simultaneous Festival in Glasgow) and small are a regular feature. and this year is no excepdon.
The new National Youth Choir of Scotland will make its debut in both cities in an imaginatively contrived collaboration with the Southampton University Symphony Orchestra. The Choir will perform ()rff’s showpiece Carmina Burn/m under their director. Christopher Bell.
Dance will feature for the first time when the Leicestershire Arts
Symphonic Wind Band
and Arts Youth Dance perform a new version of William Sweeney‘s Sirt't'ncv Axtmv. It will take place in the Royal Museum of Scotland. while the final concert will be in St Giles Cathedral.

band in the resurgence of the late 80s. The sextet‘s \ ibrant. exploratory brand of contemporary jazz. won them a lot of friends. but the group went into cold storage for a while. and the various constituent members -- notany Kevin MacKenzie. Phil Bancroft and Brian Kellock ~ set up various projects of their own.
Last summer though. the band reconvened for a I‘ringe residence. and haw: played a number of subsequent gigs. with the old virtuosity and imaginative ensemble exchange still in evidence.
They are well worth catching in either of their residences. the first of which is in a-very welcome recent addition to the Edinburghjazz scene. Henry's Cellar Bar. An expanded programme it ill run there throughout the Fringe. featuring a diverse and exciting cross section of Scottish-based musicians. (Kenin Mathieson)
