Swoon! go the mammas of a certain age as their one-time teenybopper idol strolls onstage in his castaway rags to serenade them in his self-penned panto take on Daniel Befoe’s washed- up classic. What their otfspring make of this cheerful but rather leathery looking Crusoe, though, is anybody’s guess. He isn’t much cop at telling jokes, and his singing’s a bit dodgy at times too, but ma went all funny and giggly when she heard he was coming to town, so he must be good at something.
Sure enough, Essex is a dab-hand at being himself, a cheeky-chappy gypsy rogue with an orb-like gleam in his eye and a spring in his step. Well, a bit of one - he never once threatens to break sweat during the numbers, but
wins out by simply not taking himself too seriously. If only others of his generation had done likewise oi late, perhaps they wouldn’t have made such laughing stocks of themselves.
Speaking oi which, one-time .lunior Showtime host Bobby Bennet (ask yer ma again), makes a brilliant Dame, his saucy patter more than making up for any comic shortcomings from Essex Man, whose daughter Verity turns in a pretty if ineffectual Polly. Once the momentum builds, though, all ages are transported to another land, where - with both llold Me Close and-Gonna Make You A Star on offer — it’s desert island discs for sure. The rest of the music, again penned by Essex, is kind of Afro-cabaret, as if Essex had spent his time these last few years listening to Andy Kershaw as played by the Radio Two Big Band.
Probably a tad too starry-eyed for Scots panto purists, this is a well- heeled if slightly clumpy romp, and if

it keeps the kids and ma happy, then maybe pop can nip out for a pint without being noticed. (lleil Cooper)

High Road‘s Mary Riggans and Natalie Robb in the tale of the skivvy girl. the golden slipper and the handsome prince who rescues her from two horrible. nasty ugly sisters. Not to be confused with Cinderella at The King’s.

Roald Dahl’s spooky tale. adapted and directed by kids’ theatre supremo David Wood. The ladies gathered at an English seaside hotel seem pleasant enough. but our young hero beings to suspect a conspiracy to turn children into mice. Can he save the day?

Sacco And Vanntti Sun 12 Jan. 8pm. £2.50. Staged reading of a new gangster play written and directed by Bill Bryden of The Ship and The Big Picnic fame and featuring two Italian immigrants awaiting execution on payroll robbery/murder charges which they deny. The cast includes Brian Cox. Kevin McNally and James Ellis.
Tangled Webs Sun 19 Jan. 8pm. £8 (£4). Paragon Ensemble Scotland let rip with a music-theatre double-bill combining the skills of conductor David Davies. soprano. mezzo soprano. tenor. baritone and The National Youth Music Theatre Choir from MacRobert Arts Centre. The first. Madness lit By lightning. is a collaboration between acclaimed Indian composer Naresh Sohal and writer Trevor Preston (who wrote The S weenev). The second piece.The Lie. is a chilling tale from Robert MacLennan. set to a score by celebrated young Scottish composer David Horne.
