Holsten Bier Fest

This is a wee bit out of our catchment area but if you fancied a weekend that yOu might never remember then head to Newcastle The city's Tyne

Brewery on the Gallowgate opposite St 5 James Park is ' playing host to the Holsten Bier Fest until Sunday 1 June, A huge bier keller holding 2,500 drinkers has been set up to contain the I, revellers while waiters and waitresses are being fitted out for their lederhosen as you read.

Needless to say oompah bands are on the agenda and the organisers have even composed their own touching little bier fest song, which runs along the lines of 'All stand steins up high/Sway With new friends, Side to side.' No doubt there'll be plenty of swaying With new friends although standing with stems on high might prove a bit more difficult by the end of the night.

Food galore is planned With a projected consumption of two and a half tonnes of cabbage, 100 Spit- roasted pigs, 10,000 frankfurters and, this is the truly terrifying bit, an entire tonne of gherkins is geing to disappear

down capacious Geordie gullets. The organisers estimate that 50,000 happy oompah enthusiasts are gomg to drink 25,000 gallons of Holsten between them. Working out at iust four pints a head, one can't heip but ponder as to whether or not someone has severely underestimated Newcastle's thirst.
