the world was literally his oyster.

He's put this experience to good use and created a new menu that mirrors the JOurneys which his tastebuds have made. So, leave your passport at home and get stuck into the likes of spiced lamb fillet with rice, curried pumpkin and sweet potato or Jamaican grilled jack fish with coconut sauce. Main courses are around a tenner and starters hover about the £4 mark. You can book a table on 0141552 0001.

National Curry Day Well, why not? We seem to have national days set aside for everything from insomnia to haemorrhoids. At least curry is something to celebrate.

Monday 10 November has been designated National Curry Day, with selected restaurants throughout Britain donating 10% of the day’s takings (both eat-in and take-away) to Save The Children.

Not that the great British public need much encouragement to beat a path to their nearest curry merchant. This year, curry overtook fish and chips as the nation's favourite take-out meal, with Brits scoffing a gut-busting half a million curries a day, supplied by more than 8500 Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants and take-aways. According to a survey by somebody With far too much time on their hands, chicken tikka massala holds the Number One spot in Britain's curry Top Twenty.

It transpires that Gladiators Ace is partial to the odd curry or two, citing a medium spicy King Prawn curry as his favourite. Fascinating as that may or may not be, Side orders think that much more pleasure could be derived from watching Ace trying to chase contenders around the arena after wolfing a couple of kormas on top of four pints of lager.

On a more serious note, you can phone the amusineg named Curry Day Hotline on 07000 780 837 to find out which restaurants are participating in the charity event.(Jonathan Trew)
