Jim Byers gets the lowdown on Tony Sapiano.

Early club experiences From the age of - seventeen, at seminal clubs like The Mud Club and Delirium.
Early muslcomaklng experiences Started making pause button mix tapes in his late teens. ,
The turning point When he was 21, his - girlfriend brought him a pair of decks for his birthday.
The result Music became his life. The decks stayed, the girlfriend went.
Early influences In the early 905, he respected Andrew Weatherall for his consistently innovative attitude and his disregard for musical genres.
The next turning point Bored by the rise of progressive house, a friend suggests that Sapiano pay a visit to the legendary hard and fast house/techno night Trade, hosted by Daz Saund and Trevor Rockclifie.
The result He went every week for two years, watching, listening and learning. It was a lesson well learnt — he later took over a three month residency at Final Frontier from Mrs Woods while she was on maternity leave. After that, his reputation as a hard-as-nails DJ was established.
Recording career His first track. ‘Sputnik Sunday' was released on IT Records; his second, a punishing hard. house workout called ‘Spike lt' was released on Weatheratl's Sabrettes label. The follow-up, 'Maniak', a frightening iSdBPM beat frenzy, was released soon after. To bring things full circle. 'Maniak' was remixed by Saund and Rockcliffe. two of Sapiano’s biggest influences. The next level Sapiano went on to record for Third Mind and Filter and again for Sabrettes, drawing favourable comparisons to Jeff Mills for his hard and intense style. Later, in 1996, Sapiano moved from Sabrettes onto Weatheratl's new Emissions label, releasing music as Sapiano and The Party Crashers, with Felix of 'Don‘t You Want Me?’ fame. This represented a move from the hard sound to a more acidic, jacking nwhouse style.
What can you expect? Sapiano is well known for liking all kinds of music, from techno to Northern Soul, so he keeps an open mind when it comes to wing. A housier direction has emerged from his techno background, but expect the unexpected.
