A rock concert headlined by Garbage. direct from their European dates. playing their first gig in singer Shirley Manson‘s home town and their last on the Version 2.0 tour. The impressive line-up also features List favourites ldlewild and The Delgados. plus surprise guests.

Opera In The Gardens East Princes Street Gardens. 8.30-l().30pm. £10. The biggest open air classical concert ever per- formed in Scotland features soloists from Scottish Opera and 80 musicians from Scotland‘s national orchestras.

Donald Maxwell (baritone) and

Catriona Smith (soprano) are conduct-

ed by James MacMillan and Richard Armstrong. Guest solo performance by Karen Mathieson of Capercaillie. The repertoire includes An Orkney Wedding With Sunrise. ‘Jewel Song' from Faust. ‘The Merry Widow Waltz' and ‘Flower Of Scotland'. Wine. champagne and picnic boxes will be available. People should bring their own seating or rugs.

The Big Hooley

Assembly Rooms. George Street. 9pm—late. £12.50. A live ceilidh running well into the small hours featuring The Boys Of The Lough with Aly Bain. The Robert Fish

Band. Ceolbeg and Callanish Ceilidh Band.

Transe Express

Parliament Square (assembly point)/Princess Street (finale). 10.45pm. Free. A spectacular street theatre finale to the celebrations. with world renowned French inter- active theatre company Transe Express. The Marseilles-based com- pany. working with 50 local young people. will perform the world pre- miere of their new show. Drunmting Up The Nation. assembling at Parliament Square where a proces- sion will move towards Princes Street for the finale. which involves some unusual fireworks.
