THE ARCHES

More of a musical gig than a piece of theatre, this new work performed by the Arches Theatre Company and directed by Ben Harrison takes the music of Patti Smith and Lisa Tuttle as its inspiration, with live percussion from some of Scotland’s finest new-wave drummers. Eve and Chrystalhouse Fri 256m 26 Feb. 8pm. £6 (£4). Two tickets for the price of one on Fri 25 Feb. Two plays from Collusion Theatre Company: Chrystalhouse, a moving, short piece about two female tramps by award- winning writer Eddie Mall, followed by Eve, the story of a young Glaswegian girl searching for truth and meaning after the breakdown of her relationship.

It's Not My Accent — It's Your Ears Wed 23 Feb. 7.30pm. £2 (50p). East Glasgow Youth Theatre continue to build on their reputation for strong productions, with this new piece devised by the company members themselves. It’s NotMyAcceni. . . celebrates all things Scottish, with particular emphasis on the new parliament and even newer millennium. To add that extra special touch of tartanry, the Vale of Clyde Pipe Band will be joining them on stage.

The Pleasure Man Until Sat 26 Feb (not Sun/Mon). 7.30pm. £10 (£3).A11 tickets £3 on Tuesday. First performed on Broadway in 1928, Mae West’s controversially saucy tale of a backstage lothario, and the revenge exacted on him by one of his victims, was banned on its second performance. Directed by Stewart Laing, the Citizens’ Theatre bring it back to the public stage. See review.
Jazz Until Sat 26 Feb (not Sun/Mon). 7.30pm. £10 (£3). All tickets £3 on Tuesday. (Stalls Studio). Jon Pope directs Jean Rhys’s (Wide Sargasso Sea) story of a Dominican girl caught in the poverty
trap in London, who looks to music for her salvation. See review.
Endgame Until Sat 26 Feb (not Sun/Mon). 7.30pm. £10 (£3). All tickets £3 on Tuesday. (Circle Studio). Robert David MacDonald directs the Citizens’ Theatre in Samuel Beckett’s exploration of the human condition, focussing on blind man Hamm, who keeps his parents in ashcans and his lame servant Clov, who is forced to share a room with him. See review.
Filth Tue 29 Feb—Sat 4 Mar. 7.30pm. £10 (£3). All tickets £3 on Tuesday. (Main Stage). Tam Dean Burn returns to the Citizens’ in this stage adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s most recent novel. Directed by Harry Gibson, Dean Burn plays no less than fifty characters in this sordid tale of sex, drugs, murder and police corruption. Formerly shown in one of the studio spaces before Christmas, this excellent production now makes it on to the main stage.

'the University of Glasgow Theatre Studies Course present a series of short scenes which have risen out of workshops and discussions held by Iain Reekie, artistic director of the much lauded 7:84 Theatre Company. Taking place over three nights, each performance will feature four pieces lasting approximately twenty minutes, featuring work by some of the 20th century’s greatest playwrights.

Home examines the relationship between a successful, young woman who returns home to her equally independent mother. See review.

Looking for Sarah Thu 24—Fri 25 Feb. 8pm. £7 (£3). Home Is Where The Art Is perform their acclaimed one-woman homage to Sarah Bernhardt. Pene Herman-Smith is the devoted fan who, in revealing the intimate details of Bernhardt’s personal life, crosses the line between admiration and obsession.
Three Sisters Liz Lochhead's superb adaptation of Chekov's masterpiece combines poignancy and humour to provide the best piece of Scottish theatre of the year so far. Her updating of the story to the late 405, with an English family of middle-class intellectuals feeling marooned in the Highlands is very plausible in performance, while the cast hit their straps under the direction of Tony Cownie. Edinburgh, Royal Lyceum Theatre, until Sat 4 Mar.
Horses, Horses, Coming In In All Directions Ben Harrison, one of the strongest young directing talents in Britain today, leads us through the labyrinthine spaces of The Arches for a night of close-up entertainment on the theme of love and loss. Three talented performers guide you through much that is still loveable in popular music, and demonstrate an impressive array of physical theatre skills on the way. Glasgow: The Arches, until Sat 79 Feb.
Jazz Julie Saunders' energetic performance as a woman confronted with bigotry and misunderstanding in 605 London is as compelling to the eye as is her singing to the ear. An intriguing night of studio theatre, which uses its compact space to good advantage. Glasgow: Cr'tr'zens' Theatre, until Sat 26 Feb.
Mae West — All Of Me Sat 26 Feb. 8pm. £7 (£3). Another homage to womanhood from Home Is Where The Art Is. This time Pene Herman-Smith takes to the stage as the famously sassy Mae West, to reveal secrets about her life and loves.
