If the eyes are the window to the soul, then the face is the gateway to the brain. A single facial expression can say far more than a hundred words, and the entire meaning of something can alter immeasurably when backed up by a smile or a grimace. To an adult, the many nuances of a face are second nature, but to a young child the combined efforts of the eyes, mouth and nose open up a world of possibility. With this in mind, the City Art Centre have chosen portraiture and still life as the central themes of their current
exhibition Artworks: Faces And Things.
Children rarely need encouragement to pick up a pen and start drawing, but this excellent exhibition uses a range of interactive pieces to maximise their creativity. Comprising jigsaws of children pulling faces, rows of mirrors with instructions on which expression to adopt, dressing up hats and glasses, easels and a huge selection of colouring pens, beads and wool to create your own artwork with, the fourth floor of the gallery is a funfest waiting to happen. Many of the activities on offer are as easy or hard as you want to make them, meaning a very young child can get just as much from building a colourful wall montage, or creating line drawings in sand, as an
older child with more artistic skill.
A trip to an art gallery can often be a dull affair for kids, with constant chimes of 'don’t touch that’ levelled at them. Here they can touch to their hearts content — just don‘t be offended if your child's portrait of you looks
