It is said that true geniuses are never recognised in their own time, or town for that matter. ‘I can’t really get a gig in Edinburgh and nobody wants to book me; I don’t know why,’ says Joseph Malik, the Glasgow born DJ, producer and angelic singer who lives in Leith and has just gone international. The Japanese can’t get enough of him, the French would happily give him nationality and every major MC and producer in the land wants to work with him. This will come as little surprise to anyone who has heard his sumptuous debut album Diverse with its sweet soul
infected grooves.
But Malik is at pains to point out that singer- songwriting is not the only string to his bow. ‘I don’t see myself as a singer,’ he says. ‘l’m mainly a DJ, I don’t want people thinking I’m some sort of soul guy, I do a lot of electronic stuff. How all this came about was that I did a track called ‘Crackpipe’ with Black’nized years ago and once we had done that, I thought: “Yeah I can sing,” but I wanted to know what to sing, which was something beautiful and spiritual, so writing the album became like writing an autobiography of my life with poems and songs. I just aimed to make deep spiritual organic truthful music.’
Malik seems uncomfortable talking about his
deeply personal debut and becomes more verbose about the future. ‘There’s a lot of great remixes coming out soon: Aqua Bassino is remixing the Bill Withers tune (‘Take It All In And Check It Out’), Grand Unified is remixing ‘Futuristica’ and Zero 7 are remixing ‘Soul Blues’. I’ve also just done a track with Dolphin Boy and I’ve been working with the new Darren Emerson supergroup (which includes Steve Hewitt from Placebo, Tim Deluxe and David Donnelly) which is definitely gonna blow up when it comes out next year, it’s kind of Marshall Jefferson meets Jimi Hendrix.’ As well as Mayfield, Gaye and Shuggie Otis, Malik feels he has been deeply influenced by Prince Paul, Pro Herc, Norman Jay and Aqua Bassino, but his real guidance comes from ‘three brothers who have always been with me:
Spike Lee, Malcolm X and Ali’.
