: Get ready for some deep hou It’s funny how words can be reappropriated. Garage used to be the name for all that great American house-music of black origin, with its incredible soul and groove, closer to disco and jazz than anything else. Now it’s the byword for the music of tacky, lightweight beats and the incessant nagging of London boy-racer drivel. One man who knows all about the true meaning of this great musical form is Kerri Chandler, a man who has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time.
He started spinning at the Rally Record Club in East Orange, New Jersey at the age of 13, growing up in a neighbourhood grooving to the sublime sounds of Tony Humphries at the Zanzibar Club. The spartan sense of invention that pervaded the clubs in his youth is evident in his approach to mixing. Tracks float in and out of one another, sharing soundspace and melding each other into a coherent, soulful whole. In his expansive breakdowns, the odd counter rhythm will appear for a second and then disappear, creating a fleshy excitement rather than mechanical repetition. His basslines go from heavy and heady to playful and quirky, and are always deliriously intoxicating.
Chandler’s achievements are recounted in reverential tones in house circles, but when asked if there’s anything he still wants to do, his reply dispels all romanticism: ‘Actually, I’m doing it now and it should be done by this weekend.‘ (Johnny Regan)
