Seeing as it’s Christmas time, what’s called for are special gigs in special venues to get us all feeling the love. For this late night extravaganza Glasshouse Transmission has pretty much cornered both markets. Taking place in the Winter Gardens conservatory, among the unusual sight of green leaves during Scottish winter, will be a live set by Warp Records’ Plaid. When Ed Handley and Andy Turner first started Plaid in 1991 with their limited 1000-copy run of debut album Mbuki Mvuki, is was entirely as a side project to their more celebrated work with acid-electronica outfit Black Dog (which consisted of themselves and Ken Downie). After a few years of musical pioneering and willful anonymity, Handley and Turner eventually decided in 1995 to go full time with Plaid, kicking the intensive regime of faceless boffinry into touch by deciding to actually talk to the press and

play real live gigs.

Now onto their 12th album (this year’s Spokes) Plaid have most definitely found their place among the vanguard of modern electronica, as well as a natural home at Warp Records. Not only does this gig promise their own brand of moody, mind-expanding ambiance, but also a three-screen video projection accompaniment which has been arranged by their visual collaborator Bob, and guest DJs to see the night through. Expect that traditional Christmas spirit to be given a thorough going over.
