SNJO PLAY OLIVER NELSON

Saxophonist Oliver Nelson is best known for an album which didn’t feature a big band, his classic Blues and the Abstract Truth session of 1961. Nelson was a gifted arranger and composer for bigger forces, however. both as a leader of his own occasional bands (his Afro/American Sketches, also from 1961, is a prime example), and for other artists, including Wes Montgomery. Having sampled a more contemporary sound with the Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays material featured in their last concerts, Tommy Smith turns the focus on Nelson's big band charts in this latest outing for the excellent SNJO. (Kenny Mathieson).
