1 Her harp The harp is one of the forgotten instruments of modern music. but not for much longer it Ms Newsom has her way. Having played the instrument since she was eight years old. Newsom has studied Celtic. Venezuelan. Senegalese. classical and American traditional incarnations of the instrument, and incorporates all that into her kooky nu-tolk sound. 2 Her voice Where to start? She claims it doesn't sound childlike, but she's wrong. Newsom's voice is a thing of wide-eyed wonder. part Bjdrk weirdness. part cackling witch, pan helium-fuelled childish innocence. and a complete one-oft. 3 Her words Newsom’s great way with words started early with her self- released Walnut Whales album. Her latest long player. released on esteemed American indie Drag City, is The Milk-Eyed Mender which contains songs called things like ‘Clam, Crab. Cockle. Cowrie‘ and 'Sprout and the Bean'. What‘s all that about. then? 4 Her support Newsom is playing with an eclectic selection of Drag City labelmates. including nu-traditional Scottish tolkster Alisdair Roberts (formerly of Appendix Out), acoustic drone purveyor Six Organs of Admittance and the prog-folk shambling of White Magic. 5 Her pals Don't take our word for the fact that she's great. her fans include Cat Power.
