It seems that Lickety Spit is a big fan of the Gillian McKeith/Jamie Oliver healthy eating philosophy. In the town of Plain in Scotaly, Granny Loafy has constipation, Mr MacBerto has bad breath and Big Tony has had all his energy sapped from eating too much pasta. In fact, it is exactly this diet of bland, starchy food and a lack of vegetables that make for a troubled life in Plain. But luckily Strega Nona, who has just returned from her round-the-world travels, is on hand to change all that with the aid of her magic spaghetti pot and a passion for interesting cuisine. But this is by no means a dull, preachy piece from the well-loved company. Starting off in the foyer, the play gradually moves through a series of fun introductions, with some infectious songs to help it

along the way, until it reaches the main theatre. First we meet the adventurous Strega Nona, who remembers Plain when there were still plump fruits and vegetables growing everywhere. Next come Mayor MacBerto and his wife, who have enforced their love of all things tasteless on the village by selling only bland food in their shop. Then there's their son Big Tony, a loveable fool who eats nothing but unadorned pasta, although his love for the beautiful Sugarina eventually leads him to try all sorts of exotic fare. It is these larger-than-life characters, teamed with a wicked sense of humour, that keep this slick show rolling along, played out with such energy that the audience can't help but get caught up in it. While 70 minutes may seem a long time to sit still, the production has a life beyond its allotted length, with songs and ideas that stick in your head for weeks afterwards.
