ISOPOD

out in run Q! GALLERY

87—89 Saltmarket, Glasgow; Mon—Sat 11am—5pm. www.qga|lery.org

Situated next to an old-fashioned barber shop in a dishevelled part of town (estate agents would call Saltmarket ‘emerging’), the 0! Gallery is the first queer visual arts space in Scotland. It also doubles up as the headquarters of Glasgay!, the annual queer arts festival that opens on 20 October, and Glasgay!’s producer, Steven Thomson, is the manager of the gallery too.

There’s no rainbow flag or pink triangle hanging outside the venue, because Thomson believes the gallery should entice all, and allow them to step inside and be brought closer to queer culture. The space itself is simply decorated, and mindful of the need to develop a commercial side in the absence of Arts Council funding. Two bookshelves house volumes provided by Borders, from lesbian fiction to Tom of Finland, and there’s a showcase of pottery homewares by a gay Egyptian artist.

0! Gallery’s inaugural exhibition is by Brighton queer arts collective PopChoc. Paul Griffin presents scintillations of light and neon glows across a black background, while Kitty Finegan combines the weighty (a boxer being counted out and Las Vegas’ strip) with the furry (dice and slippers). ISOPOD’s paintings of faces in goggles and strange glasses are, like Finegan’s work, predominantly in black, red, white and yellow. Jose Antonio Benabarre’s work is more muted, with collaged human forms linked by threads to letter, clocks and boxes on a beige, untouched canvas.

PopChoc is followed by Christopher Bowen’s Bodyshots photos, and a cartoon~cum-seaside-hoarding rendering of Healthy Gay Scotland’s Cock Tales magazine later in the autumn. (Robin Lee)
