new generation of English traditional musicians, as a fiddle/melodeon and vocal duo, or as the core of Eliza Carthy’s Ratcatchers band. But after five years they got the itch to supersize themselves and Bellowhead were born. Back for Celtic Connections, this time at the Garage, Boden thinks the band’s changed in the last year. ‘It’s become weird, experimental, circus-like. Makes me think of psychedelic bands - but we’re not. We’re more cabaret.’ With a sousaphone at the bottom end and a cello and horn section under the fiddles, they’re certainly not your average folk outfit. ‘We like to play rock venues,’ says Boden. “We’re big (11 piece), full on and quite theatrical, and we love getting people dancing.’
