NO GOLDEN HELLO AT POLO Last night. for the second time in a month, my friends and I were refused entry to the Polo Lounge. The last thing my two friends (aged 25 and 26) and I expected was to be lD'd. As a 28 year-old professronal. I don't carry proof of age around With me. and haven't felt the need to for almost a decade. Now. I could understand it if we were roaring drunk. but we were stone cold sober. I could perhaps understand if it was very late at night. and the building was already teeming With punters. but it was 10.20pm. and there wasn't even a queue outSide. Flattering as it is to be ID'd for a straight bar or club, it's a lot less amusmg to be refused entry for the only decent gay club in Glasgow. This was the first time we had managed to get together to go out in ages — not being students. we have

So why were we refused entry? Is there a secret handshake we're missing out on? Because the sneaking suspicion is that we were knocked back for looking too straight. for the crime of wearing dresses and make—up. Particularly as peeple who were clearly younger than us were flitting merrily in and Out for cigarettes while we were being rebuffed by the bouncers.
