Yet. this year. it’s the turn of rock upstarts The View to run rampage among the battlements of lidinburgh Castle. Virtually unheard of until a few months ago. 2007 has seen the band. who are from Dundee’s Dryburgh estate.

MUSIC PROMOTER BILLY KELLY DIES
I We at The List were saddened to hear of the death from cancer of Billy Kelly, who was a driving force in Scotland’s live music industry. Kelly was perhaps best known as the visionary behind Glasgow’s Big Big World and Big Big Country showcases through his company Soundsfine Ltd, and as a major promoter of international live roots music at Scottish venues. His reputation as one of the most talented and hardworking men in the business was built up over a lengthy career, which included a spell as general manager and music programmer of Glasgow’s Mayfest (a precursor to Celtic Connections). He succeeded in reuniting the original members of The Incredible String Band for the first time in 20 years and was a gifted pianist in his own right. His energy, drive and enthusiasm will be sorely missed. We would like to extend our sympathy to Billy’s wife Anne and their two children. (AR)

I The List has been banging on about this poignant, lyrical masterpiece since its release a few months ago, and now The Death of Mr Lazarescu has deservedly scooped this year‘s BBC World Cinema Award. Romanian director Cristi Puiu’s darkly human comedy follows the increasingly desperate attempts of a seriously ill man to get medical treatment in the face of overwhelming inefficiency and bureaucracy over the course of one night. The film beat off stiff competition from the likes of Michael Haneke's sublime Hidden and Almodovar's Vo/ver.
