When did ymi start your job? The beginning of summer 2002.

What done. your job involve?

I work on all the aspects of the Scottish concerts for a pretty amazing roster of bands as well as organising Indian Summer. I will basically talk to a band’s agent, come up with an idea for which venue will work best at a particular time

of year or campaign, figure out a budget, work through the contract, come up with an advertising plan and oversee the running of the show on the night.

WIIEJI. arr: flit: I')(:Y,‘.I £1an wwrui aspects {)i your jolt?

The best aspects include working with bands who have a really strong, all encompassing aesthetic and are prepared to run with it. That could be the over the top, carnivalesque stage show of Scissor Sisters or the monolithic, glacial slabs of smoke-drenched, becowled volume that is Sunn 0))). There are also the moments when, after trawling through piles of CDRs, MP3s, promo CDs or myspace sites, on the endless search for something great, you discover something truly mindblowing. For instance the first time I heard Sufian Stevens. Arcade Fire or TV On The Radio... It's even better when the general public seem to agree with you.

As the following tales may attest, the worst aspect of the job is probably my poor grasp of accounting.

Whirl: (.IItI you (IO Iii7iiil’ff you ".I‘JIHKTIII IItlF. job?

I dropped out of university in 1995, spent a couple of years touring in bands which have since become largely (and, for - the most part, rightly) forgotten. This mostly entailed hanging out on the side of the motorway waiting for the eastern

European version of the AA to come and fix our dilapidated

transit van so we could drive for another eight hours to play

to 70 people, 17 dogs and a pony in some sqalid youth club.

I came off the road to run my own business (into the ground).

At this point I was offered a job at PCL, politely declined and moved on, like a bad penny, to booking shows at the 13th j note café & club. After two years of my inverse midas touch that too went bust, so cap in hand and with my tail between I my legs, I eventually found myself occupying the post of Scotland’s second tallest promoter.

Bankrupt all the other businesses you work for? When you're the last man standing you'll find someone to take pity on you. Or start from the bottom. Come up with a strong idea of your own and do everything yourself. Go on tour and see what it's like from the band’s point of view. Don't expect to make any money.

Well l’ve never seen Wilco so that‘s high on the list. Every time I've seen The Flaming Lips, Spiritualized (Acoustic Mainlines), Mouse On Mars or Michael Gira they've been nothing short of incredible and I'm really excited about seeing Daniel Johnston with a full band and checking out Modeselektor. I'm going to be spreading myself thin.
