Yann Martel’s Man Booker Prize- winning novel, The Life of Pi, has been given a new lease of life by the painterly illustrations of Croatian artist Tomislav Torjanac. In 2005 Canongate teamed up with The Times to find an artist to illustrate the delightful tale of Pi Patel and his tiger friend, Richard Parker. The competition expanded globally and invitations to visualise the novel were accepted from as far afield as Australia and Canada. Central to Torjanac's selection was his decision to paint the illustrations as if seen through the eyes of the young castaway. Torjanac's bright and bold images bring a fantastic sense of immediacy to the novel. and further embellish the ideas of storytelling established by Martel‘s text.
