Around Town

REVIEW OF THE YEAR

‘I edit the Around Town section of The List.’ I tell people. ‘Oh right.’ they say. ‘What's that. then?’

‘Well.’ I say (quickly. before their eyes glaze over). “we cover all the events that don’t really fit in anywhere else.’

It’s a pretty fair summary of the year in Around Town. to be honest: there have been more and more of those awkward events that don't sit easily in any other section of the magazine. Where would you put something like Shedowed Spaces. Which happened in July in a series of hidden locations around Edinburgh and Glasgow: OK. it was run by the same people who produce music festivals Instal and Kill Your Timid Notion. and involved performances by leading experimental musicians. but it was also a series of readings on and writings about urban architecture. Similarly. in October. Glasgow’s third Hidden City project commissioned site-specific poetry performances about the gratfitied bridge over the Clyde at Jamaica Street. The increasing popularity of spoken word. mixed art form cabaret events like the bi-monthly Licence Pending at the Tron Theatre present problems for lazy journalists after easy classifications; while the hugely popular Dr Sketohy‘e Anti Art School (Edinburgh and Glasgow. monthly) - essentially life drawing classes. but with alcohol and foxy. fetishy burlesque performers stripping slowly for your sketching pleasure. Would that go in the Visual Art section? in Theatre. maybe?

This rampant. genre-crossing wackiness has produced some of the most interesting events of the year from the chaos. October's Glimmers In Limbo exhibition brought Glasgow's oldest music hall back to vivid life. while the multi- platform Comic Book Project at the Edinburgh Festival pulled together comedy. art. Barbra Streisand and really big comic books into something entirely unclassifiable. Issue-based festivals are benefiting from the mix up too: the brand new Scottish Mental Iieeith Arts a Film Festival combined music. art, theatre. talks and film with conscience-raising aplomb.
