When did you start your job? I started the company and therefore my present job in February 2005
So what does your job actually involve? Sketch has grown and developed in so many fantastic and unforeseen ways since the early days. Originally I set out to freelance as a Graphic Designer for a spell while I decided where I wanted to go next. Larger this was once again toying with the idea of moving to London - l have always been hugely romanced by the idea, but no doubt hugely unrealistic too. On a day-to-day level I attend meetings with my eclectic mix of clients and cater for their various design needs. This can cover anything from concept design and development of a new compa- ny logo, through the various elements of brand manage- ment, to designing and directing the construction of web- sites and company signage. More recently I have also been covering many aspects of interior design for a num- ber of clients, so this throws up a whole different angle of design and project management. On a practical level I am also my own secretary, bookkeeper and manager - the first thing l let my business afford was an accountant, and I think I love her!
Best I worst aspects? I have never been separated from my laptop for more then 24 hours since February 2005! Revolting but that covers both.
What did you do before you started this job? During college I was privileged to hold two work experi- ence positions, one at The Almond Consultancy and one at Caledonia Magazine, which extended well into my post college years. These positions and the people that I encountered whilst holding them gave me a fantastic insight into a vibrant and exciting industry that I knew I wanted to be a part of. Since then I have held a variety of positions within the industry working for such companies as graphic design agency Eskimo Design, magazine and printed media design company CMYK and contemporary fashion kilt wear company let Century Kilts. I have also maintained a flourishing relationship working on various levels with fashion photographer Anna Isola Crolla. I am proud to say that today I still have the pleasure of work- ing with and for many of the people that I met whilst nothing but a young and enthusiastic student!
What's the best way to get a job like yours? Well I would always say that experience within the industry is essential, both as a learning process and as a valuable way to make good contacts. College is normally neces- sary but for me I am better at learning hands on.
If you could, what advice would you give to your- self at the start of your career? To follow my heart more when my head was ruling. As a school leaver I allowed myself to be persuaded towards a more aca- demic career and I sometimes kick myself for not having had more courage in my own conviction. In the long run though, I got where I wanted to be.
and finally . . . where do you see yoursetf in ten years time? Well, darineg Sketch Graphics reelaunches as Facion (the grown up and slightly more sophisticated big sister of Sketch) at the beginning of September. The idea/dream of Facion has been floating around in my head for a good couple of years now and so the prospect of that dream actually coming to fruition is incredibly exciting for me. I would hope that in ten years time Facion is still a stimulating part of my life and that I continue to be presented with the fantastic opportunities within the art and design world that I seem to come across at the moment.
