How did you get that job?

Name Jilli Blackwood

Job Title Self employed artist

When did you start your job? I set up my studio in Glasgow in 1986, shortly after graduating from Glasgow School of Art. I was determined to stay in Glasgow and create an artistic life here, rather than following the pack to London. I didn’t want to become part of the ‘brain drain’ from Scotland.

So what does your job actually involve? Well, everything you possibly could think of. Right now, I am working on a new collection of ‘Art to Wear’ kimonos for the gallery that represents me in New York. I have just completed a large public art commission for Biocon of Bangalore, one of the world’s leading biotech companies. I was invited to donate a piece to the Marie Curie Diamond Auction which will take place in July at the Royal Academy in London. I donated a dual purpose work, ‘Sublime’ which is both an ‘Art to Wear’ meditation cloak and a wall hanging. I have other projects on the go but client confidentiality means I can’t give away any more details at the moment . . .

Best / worst aspects? Being my own boss is both the best and the worst aspect. I know her strengths and weaknesses intimately!

What did you do before you started this job?

I was a student at Glasgow School of Art, studying embroidered and woven textiles. When I graduated in 1986 I was offered a job at a major London fashion house, the infamous Miss Jean Muir. This offer was a huge vote of confidence, but I turned her down to pursue my own career as an artist. This was the greatest lesson l have learnt: staying true to myself.

What’s the best way to get a job like yours? When you’re self-employed you have to be clued-up on

the practical stuff, as well as the creative. After art school

I enrolled on a business course called ‘Graduate

Enterprise’ at Stirling University which gave me an invalu-

able grounding in the mundane matters of business which are so important. The best qualities to possess for a career like mine are single mindedness, dogged deter- mination and a sunny disposition.

If you could, what advice would you give to your»

self at the start of your career? Learn, commit, and then go for it!

and finally . . . what’s the strangest fabric or material you’ve worked with?

I suppose it must be the recycled fur. As a student, I used to spend my weekends at jumble fairs buying up old fur coats, an item which was once a woman’s pride and joy. I would deconstruct the panels and incorporate them into whatever crazy creation I was developing at mmfime
