So what does your job actually involve? I look out for emerging artists that would be suitable to play at the shows.
I watch bands from all over Scotland and check out the emails from bands requesting to play. The team then have meetings to discuss all the possibilities. it is a very collective approach to the band selection process. I also interview some of the bands that are going to be playing at The Mill for magazine features. The whole A&R Team have an obsessive love for new music where many of us have jobs involving emerging artists. I am currently the Regional A&R Scout for Island Records and developing new music sales through my Konnect Card so it all ties in nicely with the work that I already do.
Best / Worst Aspects? Best: Being part of a great team of people who I respect and enjoy working with and watching some of the artists that play go on to develop their careers further. Worst: It can be quite frustrating when a band you really want can’t play for whatever reason.
What did you do before you started this job? I've been working for 11 years in music doing various things from being an International Label Manager in London where I worked with artists like Mos Def to market research for Oasis to having my own record shop. I've also been involved with running events, artist management and press for bands. I also currently lecture at Ayr College on some of the music courses which I have been doing for nearly six years now.
What’s the best way to get a job like yours? Get to know how the industry works by being proactive by running your own gigs / label or helping out a local band. Apply for a music business course at college or Uni and go to networking events like Your Sound at King Tut's. Also to get your foot in the door get yourself some work experience by contacting companies directly. You need to be very aware of what is going on and be seen going to gigs. lts part having your ear to the ground and part luck by being in the right place at the right time. It’s difficult because there are very few jobs in A&R in the UK never mind Scotland so really just go out and get involved
in music, be the best you can be. then opportunities will hopefully come your way.

As a champion of new Scottish music, tell us which band‘s performance at The Mill has blown you away? There have been loads of great shows but some of my favourites that have played are Broken Records, Twin Atlantic, Pearl and
the Puppets, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Gdansk, Black Alley Screens and Diamond Sea alongside the mind-blowing Frightened Rabbit.
