No mean city
As a new exhibition prepares to launch, The Listtakes a look at the highlights. Words: Mark Petrie
A new exhibition is being launched in Glasgow next month, chronicling the history of the city. Foundation Glasgow – The Growth of a City will be a free animated exhibition charting the historic emergence and development of Scotland’s largest city. Viewers will be granted a unique opportunity, witnessing the city’s transformation from a bird’s eye view. Created by the Registers of Scotland, the exhibition will feature many thousands of years of urban growth, from way back to the Neolithic period continuing straight through to the projected developments, which the city will see in the future. The event is timed to coincide with Scotland’s Homecoming.
A 13-minute long animation shows the arrival of Saint Mungo, the founder of the city, including the Glasgow Cathedral which marks the site where
he first built his church, establishing the beginning of Glasgow’s first benchmark in history. Others highlights showcase more recent developments, including the regeneration along the banks of the River Clyde, in which many of Glasgow’s now iconic structures stand. The exhibition will also take viewers for a virtual look into the future of the city, focusing on the changes that are planned to accommodate the hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games – the next chapter in the city’s ever expanding history. The exhibition will be on show at Registers of Scotland’s Customer Service Centre, 9 George Square, Glasgow, everyday from 3 August until 7 September. Viewings will be half-hourly from 10am-4pm. NAKED AMBITION ■ Pitched as an act of ‘feminist empowerment’, performer Nic Green is looking for 150 females to bare all as part of her Fringe Festival show and dance nude to a song by US rockers the Pixies for her show Trilogy at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year. BRIEFS AFTER a 100% increase in attendance last year, The Festival of Spirituality and Peace (FoSP) is back this year and hoping to build on their success. The theme for this year is ‘The Call of Home’ and is aiming to re-store the festival ethos of using diverse ranges of art and culture as a platform for peace and reconciliation.
MUSICAL lovers should be happy to hear that Les Miserables, the world’s longest running musical, will be back in town next April as part of their anniversary celebration. The show will play at the Playhouse with Gareth Gates as Marius. Based on Vistor Hugo’s 1862 novel, Les Mis is one of the most performed musicals of all time, boasting a roster of hits including ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ and ‘On My Own’. HOLYROOD PARK is set to take a step back in time as The Historic Scotland Ranger Service organises the Hutton and A’ That tours from Fri 24–Mon 27 July, in line with the 2009 Year of Homecoming. THE GODFATHER RE-ISSUED Francis Ford Coppola’s murderous masterpiece The Godfatheris set to return to cinemas on 25 September. The re-mastered working of the film will see it restored to pristine condition for its return to the big screen. The 1972 original was responsible for giving Al Pacino his big break.
